How to apply for PAN

An application for allotment of PAN can be made online from any of these two websites:
Before moving forward with the ateps for PAN application following is the check list of documents/details needed for PAN application. Make sure to arrange these and then start the process of filling the online form.
  1. Recent passport size color photograph
  2. Proof of identity 
  3. Date of Birth proof
  4. Address Proof

Here we have explained the process of online application for new PAN for resident individuals, applicants applying by hand or applying for any changes in PAN or for duplicate PAN should make the necessary changes while applying.

Step by step process for online application of PAN through

  • Click on New PAN for Indian Citizens(Form 49A)
  • Following page will open:

  • Click on Online Application for New PAN(Form 49A)
  • Now Following page will open:

  • Here you need to select type of applicant, which for a human being will be individual. Select individual and click on select.
  • Now Form 49A for online application of PAN will appear as shown below:

  • Fill this Form 49A very carefully, as whatever details you fill in this form will be finally used to issue your PAN. 
  • On the top choose the radio button that describes your status. For people not working for army, navy or airforce, other individuals will be selected.
  • Now selection of your Assessing Officer ie. your AO code is a confusing part. Here you need to decide first your city wise, then as per further details available in the list of AO codes applicabe to you. Some times we find that more then one AO code seems to be applicable to us. In these cases you can talk to the people at  Income Tax Department of your city, or may decide a code best suited to you. Following are the steps to move forward to select your AO Code:
  • On Top of the Form click on Non international taxation AO details. Following window will open:
  • At the bottom of the screen select the applicable letter as per your city name.
  • A list of cities from the selected letter will appear, here select your city.
  • Now a list of AO codes in your city will appear. Here different criterias will also be given for applicable AO codes. Select the best suited AO code to you and click on its radio button.
  • On selecting the AO code, it will take you back to the Form 49A.
  • Now fill the form carefully.
  • Make sure to correctly spell your name.
  • Date of birth entered shall be as per your date of birth proof.
  • After filling the form carefully, at the end you need to pay fee of Rs. 105 for PAN application. This fee can be paid using online banking through your netbanking details. 
  • Now after payment being done, submit the application. If any mistake is there in the form, it will show an error message with mistakes highlighted with red color. Rectify the mistake and resubmit the form.
  • On final submission, an acknowledgement form will appear. Save the acknowledgement number for later use. 
  • Take print out of this acknowledgement form, paste your recent photograph with your signature on it, sign on the form at the space provided.
  • This final signed form shall be sent along with you date of birth proof, identity proof and address proof to the address given below. At the top of the envelope write 'APPLICATION FOR PAN- Your Acknowledgement number" (For eg. APPLICATION FOR PAN - 881010100000970)

  • The above documents and acknowledgement should reach the above address with in 15 days of online application.
Do's and don'ts for filling the PAN application:
  1. Its better to fill the form in capital letters.
  2. Name in application shall exactly match with the name in Identity proof and address proof
  3. Accurate addres shall be filled in the form because PAN will reach you by post at the address given by you.
  4. If you are submitting bank statement as address proof make sure that latest transaction page is also submitted with the main page.
  5. Make sure to let the acknowledgement and other documents reach the Income Tax PAN unit with in 15 days of online application.
