Income Tax Deparment introduced a facility of direct login to income tax e-filing account using your net banking facility. So with this latest development all the hustle bustle of resetting password is resolved and tax payers can find themselves at ease. This facility earlier was launched with few banks but now is launched with all the banks. So now if you have online banking you can also log in to your e-filing account of Income Tax department. This latest update is welcoming and will resolve all the issues faced by genuine individuals.

How to Reset Password for Income Tax India's e-filing website?

We have come across many people who registered with Income Tax India's e-filing website but later on forgot the password that they had set at the time of registeration. We frquently receive mails regarding how to reset password for Income Tax e-filing website. Here we have charted out all possible ways to reset password for Income Tax e-filing website:

Following are the possible ways to reset your e-filing password:
  • The answer to security question that you selected at the time of reisteration
  • Acknowledgement No. of the electronically filed Income Tax return for any previous year and 
  • Digital signature certificate if you had registered it with Income Tax E-filing website.
  • One Time Password(PIN)
  • Login through your Interent Banking Account. This facility presently is with very few banks, but later it is expected to be initiated with all major banks.
Now how to move forward when you have any of the above:
  1. Go to log in page of Income Tax India's e-filing website- you may copy paste this link to yourbrowser-

  1. Your PAN is the user id for e-filing website. So enter your PAN and click on forgot password (two times) as shown in the image below:

  1. On clicking on the forgot password, a screen wil emerge asking to enter your user id ie. PAN and a captcha code. Enter the same. Now following screen will appear:

  1. Now here select the appropriate option. 
  • OPTION 1- When you select -Answer Secret question- You will be asked to enter your Date of Birth which should be as per your PAN, the secret question and its answer.
  • OPTION 2- When you select - Enter e-filed Acknowledgement Number and Bank Account Number
You need to select the Assessment Year from the drop down for which e-filed acknowledgement number of the IT Return you are going to enter, then the e-filed Acknowledgement Number which is given on your ITR V and the Bank Account Number which was entered in filing the Income Tax Return. 
Now very important part: A screen will appear showing you the email id which is registered with e-filing website. It will also give you an option to change the registered e-mail id. Here on selecting the option Change email id, you will be able to change the egistered mail id and new password will be sent to the updated e-mail id.
  • OPTION 3- When you select - Upload Digital Signature- You need to upload your digital signature. 
Following two Options were introduced from the year 2014-15 after noticing the problems faced by genuine tax payers:
  • OPTION 4- When you select - Using OTP(PIN) - This is the latest improvement by e-filing portal for resetting your password. 
    • On selecting this option a One Time Password(PIN) will be sent to your registered mail id, and to your registered mobile number too. By entering both the PINs you will be able to reset your password. 
    • Here if you have lost your registered mail id or the registered id was of some one else, an option is given to reset password by giving new mail id & phone number. Make sure to give a valid mail id & mobile number, as the PIN to reset password will be sent to your mail and mobile both. You need to enter both the PINs.
    • If you chose the option of new mail id & phone number, you will also be required to enter any one of the following:
      1. TAN from your 26AS - TAN of your deductor of only for the Assessment Year 2013-14 or 2014-15
      2. Click here to know - What is 26AS?
      3. OLTAS Challan Identification Number (CIN) - Receipt number of the TAX paid by you only for the Assessment Year 2013-14 or 2014-15.
      4. Your Bank account number- this shall be the same that you filled while filing your Income Tax e-return.

  • OPTION 5- When you select - Log in through your net-banking account -
Another admirable step launched by e-filing portal of Income Tax India is that now you can log-in to your e-filing account directly through your net banking account. You can log in to your net banking account and from there choose the option of going to your Income Tax e-filing account. Once you access your e-filing account, you can easily reset password from there. 
Presently this facility is launched with Corporation Bank, Union Bank of India and Oriental Bank of Commerce, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Punjab National Bank & Bank of India.
